Phaius
tankervilleae Grace
This magnificent
terrestrial species is native to Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Indo-China
and Thailand. Weve found it quite easy to grow and bloom. They like
growing on the wet sideso if youre an over-waterer, this may
be the orchid for you! In nature, they grow in areas that are boggy part
of the year...we keep a saucer FULL of water under ours; especially during
the summer. They become quite large at maturity, with SPECTACULAR blossoms
on tall spikes. Each flower can be up to 4" across, and are distinctly
white on the back, colored on the inside (I imagine this is how the common
name Nuns Orchid was given) with a great rose-colored
lip. One writer said of it This species probably has the most spectacular
and beautiful flower of any Australian native.
