Phaius tankervilleae - One writer said of it “This species probably has the most spectacular and beautiful flower of any Australian native.”

 Phaius tankervilleae (‘Tristan’ x ‘Grace’)
This magnificent terrestrial species is native to Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Indo-China and Thailand. We’ve found it quite easy to grow and bloom. They like growing on the wet side—so if you’re an over-waterer, this may be the orchid for you! In nature, they grow in areas that are boggy part of the year...we keep a saucer FULL of water under ours; especially during the summer. They become quite large at maturity, with SPECTACULAR blossoms on tall spikes. Each flower can be up to 4" across, and are distinctly white on the back, colored on the inside (I imagine this is how the common name “Nun’s Orchid” was given) with a great rose-colored lip. One writer said of it “This species probably has the most spectacular and beautiful flower of any Australian native.” The plant shown in the flower photo is ‘Grace’—one of the parents of these babies we have for sale.
